Last night (9th April) saw a group of photographers assemble at PPS for an evening of studio based photography. Due to a number of issues getting models, the evening was changed to a lighting demonstration based on product photography.

Peter, Yvonne, Carl, Geoff, Bernie and Andrew attended and the start of the evening was an introduction and re-cap into studio based photography. Andrew demonstrated a couple of principles with regards to light, showing the different effects small relatively hard lights produce compared to much larger “soft” lights.

The above photo shows club member Peter Batty taking a photo of a wine bottle and glasses, using backlighting to reveal the shape of the bottle. We later added a big diffusion panel which made the light softer and more wrapping.

Overall a great night was had by all. If you’d like to come along to our next portrait/studio night please put your name down on the form on the notice board.

Andrew

Thursday the 8th November was a special day for Preston Photographic society. We had world renowned landscape photographer Tom Mackie with us providing a great lecture about his landscape work.

We saw a huge selection of amazing landscapes ranging from places as far afield as Iceland, the Lake District and several of the big parks in America (Bryce Canyon etc etc).

This was all delivered in Tom’s usual highly engrossing style, with plenty of humour too.

Tom had been to Preston Photographic Society as couple of years ago and we had a sell out crowd then. Thursday was no different with the room being packed – it’s surely one of the highlights of the year so far, and something which our newer members seemed to really appreciate.

Thursday 25th October saw the first members evening of the season. We had a great night with members showcasing their work and providing an insight into their thoughts and motives behind their work.

We had excellent presentations from Phil Wilcock, Pam Guy, Melvin Nicholson, Nancy Barrett, Ian Wells, Tony Higginson, Paul Iddon Geoff Clarke and Andrew Woodhouse.

It was a great opportunity to see the different types of work going on it the club, from Phil’s excellent black and white fox talbot work, through to Mel’s urban exploration images, seeing examples of portrait photography from Tony, landscape photography from Pam Nancy and Ian, macro focus stacking techniques from Paul and commercial photography from Andrew. Geoff provided an excellent insight to a variety of subjects including wildlife with a couple of stunning examples of Kingfishers.

Overall it was a fun evening and the feedback so far has been extremely positive. We look forward to holding more of these events throughout the year and seeing other members’ work.

Next week (1st November) is our second monthly competition. We look forward to seeing you all there.
