Tom Mackie Lecture Thursday 8th November

Thursday the 8th November was a special day for Preston Photographic society. We had world renowned landscape photographer Tom Mackie with us providing a great lecture about his landscape work.

We saw a huge selection of amazing landscapes ranging from places as far afield as Iceland, the Lake District and several of the big parks in America (Bryce Canyon etc etc).

This was all delivered in Tom’s usual highly engrossing style, with plenty of humour too.

Tom had been to Preston Photographic Society as couple of years ago and we had a sell out crowd then. Thursday was no different with the room being packed – it’s surely one of the highlights of the year so far, and something which our newer members seemed to really appreciate.

New Forum.

We’ve completed the final part of updating our website by updating the forum and adding it directly to the website. It will no longer direct you off this site and to a separate page for the forum.

This should give a couple of advantages, including making it easier to get to the forum from the site, but also to get back to the site from the forum.

All club members that have email addresses have had accounts set up to use the new forum and have been emailed the relevant details.

Please take a few minutes to familiarise yourselves with the new forum, and if you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Lecture: Colin Prior High Light at UCLAN.

Last night (Friday 18th November 2011) saw Preston Photographic Society hold a fantastic lecture with World renowned photographer Colin Prior.

The ticketed event was really well subscribed with a near sell out crowd who were treated to a very informative, entertaining and polished lecture by Colin.

Split into two halves with a short interval, Colin displayed some excellent images and provided some very interesting anecdotes along with commentary that had the audience transfixed.

After a short Q&A session where members asked a variety of questions, ranging from “who Colin thought were the “leading lights” in the landscape photography business” (apart from himself of course), through to the type of kit he uses and the state of the industry – particularly for newcomers, we had a raffle with some excellent prizes. These prizes included a signed copy of Colin’s latest book “High Light” and a couple of signed calendars.

PPS vice president and internal competition secretary Melvin Nicholson was the lucky winner of the signed book!

Overall it was an excellent evening with a great turn out, so thanks to not only those who helped organise the event, UCLAN for providing a great venue and also to all of those who attended.

We will add a few more images from the night in due course, but for now, here’s a BTS photo from the Q&A session.

Lecture: Deano’s Digital Dabblings

Last Thursday (10th November 2011) we had a great lecture by Graham Dean, entitled “Deano’s Digital Dabblings”.
It was a really interesting evening with Graham going through a number of his photos, explaining the thought processes behind them and giving a brief overview as to his edits.

It was interesting to see some of his early, pre-photoshop work, and the results that were possible.

It was a very enjoyable evening and our thanks go to Graham for coming along and providing us with a fun evening.

Lecture: Lightroom Exposed, Terry Hewitt

Tonight, Thursday 27th October 2011 we had a lecture by Terry Hewitt of Stockport Photographic Society on Adobe’s editing and image management software, Photoshop Lightroom.

It was an interesting lecture with Terry providing an insight into the main features of Photoshop Lightroom, the philosophy behind the software (streamlining your workflow) and also showing how the most commonly used features worked.

For those members who were new to the software it proved particularly useful and those who are more familiar with it will still have got something out of the evening.

Lightroom, like Apple’s equivalent, Aperture, aims to streamline a photographer’s workflow by providing a place to manage your images including adding keywords and other forms of metadata whilst also allowing a surprisingly large amount of adjustments to the files – in many ways negating the need to use Photoshop proper. One of the main benefits is that the workflow is non destructive meaning that at any point you can get back to the original image.

Indeed the actual image processing engine is the same as that used by Adobe Camera Raw (the RAW converter that ships with Photoshop and Photoshop elements), meaning that the photographer has the ability to apply a wide variety of adjustments to their RAW images, including White Balance correction, Exposure adjustments, Selective colour enhancements (through use of the target adjustment tool) to the hue, saturation and luminance values within an image.

Once all of this is done Photoshop Lightroom provides the photographer with the ability to print the images either as single images, picture packages (such as would be used for school photos – the same image but at a variety of sizes, on the same page) or print layouts – where you can add multiple images to a page.

It also provides the option of creating web galleries for client proofing, and a fully featured slideshow facility with the ability to save the finished slideshow as a PDF or a video file. One really nice feature is that you can sync the slideshow to a piece of music, meaning an end to looped music or slideshows which last longer than the music – a boon for AV presentations.

Overall it was a great evening and thanks must got to Terry for giving up his time to come to the club.
