Message from our President

Welcome to Preston Photographic Society website.  It is a privilege to introduce you to a society that has brought together photographers in Preston for well over a century.   Our website showcases the great work of many of our members and provides information about our club and what we offer.  In addition, there are resources which lots of people may find useful.

The club provides an opportunity for photographers of any level to join together and develop their skills through an eclectic mix of talks, competitions, exhibitions, members workshops, photowalks and general social activity.  We have a diverse and inclusive membership and anyone looking to join our club, either as a total beginner or someone with an established level of skill, will be made to feel more than welcome.

In these unprecedented times and in the wake of restrictions of Covid-19, I am pleased to say that we have continued to successfully offer a full syllabus. and are now opeating on a 'hybrid' basis with participation both face to face and via zoom. We are open to new members at any time and anyone wishing to know more is welcome to make contact through this site or to come along to our meeetings. We also have a presence on social media (Facebook and Twitter).

Thank you for taking time to explore our site and hopefully you will consider coming along and finding out more about us.

When I joined PPS in September 2018, I had no idea what to expect or whether I would be completely out of my depth.
My first meeting was a club competition night which confirmed that I was very much out of my depth, but the variety of images and the friendly banter got me hooked.
The club offers a host of photographic activities including expert speakers, technical events, club and external competitions, photo walks and social evenings. But much more than that, the club is a community of like-minded individuals with a passion for photography. There are photographers of all abilities from pro to novice, specialising in different genres and a growing number of women members. The inspiration and knowledge gained from being a part of this community is invaluable. From organised critique sessions to friendly support and advice, I have definitely improved my skills since joining the club.
My advice to those thinking  about joining is - just do it! Your photography will be all the better for it.

I have been a member of Preston Photographic Society since Sept 2016 and can say that I have enjoyed being part of such a happy and vibrant club, being made to feel welcome from day one. The weekly meetings are always entertaining with a variety of speakers and competitions run throughout the season. Although the clubs aim is to help people improve their photography by example and guidance, above all it is about having fun while learning. The photo walks and critique evenings have been of great benefit to me where help has always been freely given.

In September 2015 a notice was shared on my Facebook page. “Opening night of our new season” by Preston Photographic Society. I decided go & I was met at the door and introduced to quite a few members all of whom welcomed me, none of this sitting in a corner feeling out of place. I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed myself; the club is very friendly with everyone willing to go that extra mile to help each other.
I would highly recommend everyone to come along a give it a go. The first few sessions are free, so what have you to lose? If you don’t fancy joining the club watch out for the Summer Photo walks posted on the Facebook page as they are open to non-members.

As a novice photographer I had attended basic introduction courses and workshops and was looking for opportunities to build on what I had learned. I had visited the PPS website a few times but had hesitated on taking those steps to actually attend a meeting. In the summer of 2019 I was encouraged to come along to a meeting by a photographer on a Facebook group I was a member of. The prospect of meeting up with a friend albeit a virtual one made the step less daunting so I took the plunge and climbed the stairs to the first meeting of the season. My nerves soon settled when I was immediately invited to join a table ( not by my initial contact) and found everyone so welcoming. The last 15 months have been a fantastic learning curve and I have been given help and guidance by many members of the club. I’ve been to local spots I didn’t even know existed. Even with the restrictions of 2020 the society has been a source of great support and the zoom meetings have made juggling the work life balance a little easier and the interaction has been fabulous. If you have your doubts I would say come along and see what we are about. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose

I have been a member of Preston Photographic Society for 18 months and am so glad I took the plunge. The members are very welcoming and always helpful should you need any guidance. There have been many amazing photographers giving talks, and even in lockdown we have had interesting zoom meetings. The photo walks which are arranged are a pleasure and something I look forward to. There is always someone on hand to help should you need it. I felt quite nervous at first but was soon made to feel very welcome.  There are monthly competitions which you can enter if you wish whatever your ability and this can be very helpful in improving your photography. If you enjoy photography and want to take your hobby further then I would strongly recommend you give it a try.

I have been a member of the PPS for little over a year and is has been very enjoyable. As I walked through the door on my first meeting I expected to be asked ‘what camera gear do you have?’ but instead ‘it was what do you enjoy taking photos of?’, a welcoming start and a great indication that the club is about taking photos!
The club provides plenty of support, from members who have a wide range of interests in different genres of photography, and this has really helped me improve my own skills.
The club puts on a wide range of activities, talks from external experts, members talks, competitions and social events. This club has continued to be active during the COVID shutdown with weekly meetings providing continuing photographic support and much needed distraction to many.
Above anything, the club is supportive and fun, and I would recommend it to everyone.
