Overview
The purpose of this note is to provide an overview of the External Photographic Organisations that you may be involved with, either through Preston Photographic Society (PPS) as a Club or in your own capacity as an individual member.
Royal Photographic Society (RPS)
The Royal Photographic Society was founded in 1853 with the objective of making the art and science of photography more widely available.
The international charitable organisation is dedicated to increasing the knowledge and understanding of photography and film, supporting photographers, and inspiring public engagement.
The RPS is one of the world’s oldest photographic societies. The RPS offers a diverse education programme which includes exhibitions, talks, workshops and symposia which are held at a world-class gallery and auditorium at Paintworks, Bristol, as well as at venues across the UK, internationally and online.
Internationally-recognised qualifications, such as Distinctions, set new challenges, enhance skills and stimulate creativity.

Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) and Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union (LCPU)
The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) is a membership organisation that co-ordinates, activities for photographic Clubs in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man).
It does this through 15 geographical Federations. PPS belongs to the LCPU federation.
The PAGB organises photographic events for its Federations and Clubs. It offers services such as Recorded Lectures and its own photographic Distinctions, known as Awards for Photographic Merit.
The PAGB has strong links with similar organisations. In the UK, it has cross-representation with the Royal Photographic Society. It liaises throughout the world via its membership of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP).
The L&CPU also organises photographic events for its Clubs including an annual club competition and an annual individual competition.

Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique (FIAP)
FIAP is the only international photography body recognised by UNESCO.
It is an international federation which affiliates the national associations of photography on the basis of one per country (PAGB in our case).

Photographic Society of America (PSA)
The Photographic Society of America (PSA), founded in 1934, is a world-wide organization providing resources for photographers, from the novice to the professional.
PSA offers online learning, webinars, study groups, competitions, mentors and consultants. Of particular interest to PPS members may be the hundreds of exhibitions that gain PSA patronage and enable the photographer to accumulate acceptances towards accreditations - see separate note.

British Photographic Exhibitions (BPE)
British Photographic Exhibitions was formed in late 80's by a group of exhibitions wishing to help one another with promoting the interests of Photographic Exhibitions within a British national catchment area and learn from each others experiences.
Currently (2021) there are 15 exhibitions annually and photographers can accumulate acceptances towards accreditations - see separate note.
