Nick Hodgson - Thursday 01 May 2025
We welcome Nick Hodgson to the club on Thursday 01 May to do his talk called Free Mines Coal Faces.
Nick (FRPS) is a British documentary landscape photographer based in London, with his talk about the documentary project on coal free mining in the Forest of Dean, which formed part of his photography MA, his successful FRPS panel submission, an award winning book and various exhibitions.
Nick is a member of the RPS Distinctions Panel for the Applied and Documentary Photography genres.
The first section of his talk, discusses mining photography that he researched to inform him about his own approach to the subject matter.
After the breakhe will go through a selection of images and how he shot them with as much technical detail as the audience wants, which is usually at a fairly high level, but he is happy to go into detailed specifics.
He will finish his talk with post production and printing, showing physical examples of his F panel whcih the audience can also view at the break.

Matching Battle Competition
A slight change to the syllabus means the Matching Battle Competition which was due to take place in March will now take place on Thursday 15 May.
The scheduled Zoom Annual General Meeting will now take place the week after on Thursday 22 May.
Following last year success we will defend the trophy on home soil, as three digital images are shown by each club as they battle it out to match their image (whether images match or not is at the decision of the judge, heckling is allowed).
The club with the highest score at the end of the evening wins.
Here is the way it works
All teams operate their own computer, projector and screen so that images can be selected then projected and viewed at the same time alongside each other.
Teams displayed their images alternately with the image put up by the first team requiring to be ‘matched’ by the second team
Thirty seconds is allowed to put up a matching, or attempt at a matching, image. One point is awarded to the team displaying the first image. If the team displaying the second image is judged to be displaying a matching image, then a point is awarded to them for successfully matching the image
An additional bonus point is awarded to the team judged to have the better image of the two but if there is no match this bonus point goes to the team which put up the first image.
