Matching Battle Competition
Thursday 27 March PPS will host the Matching Battle Competition 2025 at Moor Park Social Club .
Following last year success we will defend the trophy on home soil, as three digital images are shown by each club as they battle it out to match their image (whether images match or not is at the decision of the judge, heckling is allowed).
The club with the highest score at the end of the evening wins.
Here is the way it works
All teams operate their own computer, projector and screen so that images can be selected then projected and viewed at the same time alongside each other.
Teams displayed their images alternately with the image put up by the first team requiring to be ‘matched’ by the second team.
Thirty seconds is allowed to put up a matching, or attempt at a matching, image. One point is awarded to the team displaying the first image. If the team displaying the second image is judged to be displaying a matching image, then a point is awarded to them for successfully matching the image.
An additional bonus point is awarded to the team judged to have the better image of the two but if there is no match this bonus point goes to the team which put up the first image.
Annual Melbourne Cup
Thursday 10 April is the Annual Melbourne Cup, which will be held in Australia with a video available to watch the competition.
The Melbourne Cup is a photographic ’ashes’ battle between ourselves and Preston Photographic Club (PPC) of Melbourne Australia.
It is held annually with the clubs taking it in turn to host it.
The competition was first held in 2014 and, to date, we have fared well although the scores are always close.
There are no restrictions on genre, it’s an open competition so nature restrictions for example do not apply.
Rues are confirmed every year but typically there are 25 Projected Digital Images (PDIs) per club, with no more than 2 or 3 from any photographer and all images must be new to the competition. Images tend to be scored out of 15 or 20 depending on who hosts the event and the judge.
Preston City Council - Summer Events
I have posted this on Facebook already but for those who aren't on that platform please see below.
As mentioned at last Thursday's meeting, we are coming up to the start of our Summer activity in conjunction with Preston Council.
The first event is the Egg Rolling in Avenham Park at Easter.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain access to events held by the council with the only caveat being that you must upload images (1600x1200) onto a shared Google Drive within 36 hours of the event. These are not competition-style images but images showing people enjoying themselves and a general feel of the event. These images are then available for the Council to use as appropriate.
I have attached a link to the master spreadsheet. If your name is not on the top of the spreadsheet, then just add it in, and mark which event you would like to attend. If you are struggling please let me know and I will add your name in, so that you can advise which events you would like to attend.
We only have a few places at each event, so once we have seen the uptake we will advise a definitive list and try and share it out as best we can, so you can all get a chance to help if you wish. This activity does aid the club financially so please support if you can.
Once we know who is attending I will send a link to the drive for uploading images.
In previous years we have had people say they were coming and then didn't turn up and other events where people have said they weren't coming and then turned up.
We are trying to ensure that we cover the events with enough TOGS, but also not have more than is necessary to cover each event. This will also stop us from arranging cover at the last minute if it isn't necessary. If you say that you are coming and then find out that you can't attend, you must let us know to ensure there is adequate coverage.

Many thanks

Join us on Saturday 12 April for a visit to Liverpool.
Explore the city with so much to offer, from the Cathedral quarter including the Hellios exhibition, Georgian Town Houses on Rodney Street, The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, Street art in the Fabric District, St Georges Hall, Liverpool library ( interior and exterior), Bombed out church, chinese Arch, Lime St Station and The Bluecoat to name but a few of the locations to be visited.
We plan to start the day at St George's Hall at around 10.45am and move onto the library for the staircase and roof top views across the Mersey.
We can take in the street art of the Fabric district before moving on towards the Chinese arch via art deco buildings and on to the brutalist Metropolitan Cathedral ( catholic ) and Everyman theatre and maybe have refreshment in the Philharmonic With its famous toilets.
Along the Georgian street to the Anglican Cathedral and the Helios installation. Onto the Baltic triangle/cain brewery with more street art and skatepark with a stop for lunch. We will head back to the city and take in The Bluecoat galleries and the Bombed out church. There will be opportunity for street photography and there will even be a challenge for those who want a focus .
