Gordon Watson - Thursday 28 November 2024
We welcome Gordon back to the club, following his visit of judging round 2 of our internal competition.
From a very young age Gordon has had a keen interest in Astronomy, always fascinated with what's up there in the sky. Follow Covid-19 Gordon began a project on Astro Photography, investing in an Altair Astro 72 EDF and began putting together all the other bits of equipment that are required for an Astro-Photography rig.
Gordon will give us some tips and techniques on Astro photography, showing us what he's learn't along the way.

George Robertson - Thursday 12 December 2024
We welcome George Robertson to the club, who is an award winning Photographer, International Mountain Leader and World Traveller based near Glasgow, Scotland.
George has visited many different remote and beautiful areas and gain a varied perspective on our planet whilst leading mountaineering expeditions.
The beauty, remoteness and challenge of travelling in the high mountain areas has always attracted me, George explains, through the interaction of the light with the natural landscape I have tried to capture my memories from my travels.
In 2017 and in 2020 George won Urban View category of Take a View and UK Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

External Competitions Update
The L&CPU Annual Knockout Competition in Eccles took place on Saturday 16 November.
In total 35 Clubs took part submitting 175 images judged by Mike Sharples.
PPS came 7th overall with three images getting to round 5, which was very good in a very competitive field.
The winning club was Chorley.
Thanks to Dee for attending the event on behalf of PPS and providing feedback to all members.
Feedback…Annual knockout 2024
There were some general comments that the judge (Mike Sharples) made many times relating to all the images from the 30 clubs and some observations I noted, which is as follows:
Bear in mind this is one opinion. As we see in the internal comps it’s one person’s view. The judge would assess the whole image and as he was looking to be particularly picky to remove numbers in each round the backgrounds were rich pickings. So, when assessing your image for comps look as the whole image and refine it to highlight the key focal point to tell the best story you can.
It was noticeable the landscapes / waterscapes were coming back in vogue. There were several in the comp and the judge really loved them and kept them into later rounds. He was very complementary about Tony’s image as he could feel as if he was there - ‘it has a lovely softness and tonal range’ were his comments.
Also sports had a good representation but not necessarily motorsport or motorcycle images as they didn’t go as far in the rounds. Boxing and track did well. Boxing in B&W with again good tonal ranges and no blown highlights.
There were several compositions (Janey Lazenby type shots) that also did well and reached the much later rounds. Whilst there are mixed views on this style of image the impression I got was that there were more acceptable, to this judge anyway. Chorley probably had more if this style of image than most clubs hence their higher scores in the later rounds
Please keep submitting images to the external comps as it’s a wonderful way to share your talent and help keep Preston PS in the forefront of people’s mind

There were some general comments that the judge (Mike Sharples) made many times relating to all the images from the 30 clubs and some observations I noted, which is as follows:
- Big emphasis on tonal ranges. The judge wanted to see careful editing that was sympathetic to the story being told by the image. The story plays a big part of the impact to the viewer. Does the image extract an emotional reaction - examples being Paul’s image (The Child Catcher) as it really made him pause and think about the content and implication of the image. Also, Karen’s image (Family outing to the South Pole) he loved as it made him smile, told a story and offered a good tonal range.
- Backgrounds - obviously this depends on the image but it should complement the main focus of the story. Does it complement or distract attention away from the focal point. Also are there multiple people / colours / textures that again distract. In the first round many images across all clubs were removed due to backgrounds he felt were too busy / dark / light / blown highlights - didn’t help to show off the main subject.
