"The Inter-Club Photographic Alliance" (I.C.P.A) was founded in 1909, by a group of North West clubs with the idea that local clubs should group together to form an alliance and compete against one another in the interest of healthy competition. This was originally inaugurated with thirteen founder clubs and societies.
Today's clubs compete in two competitions annually, one of which is a digital knock-out, the other being three separate comps for colour prints, mono prints and PDIs.

Digital Knock-Out
Rules
- A photographer may only enter for one club.
- Each entry should consist of eleven images, with no more than three images from any one worker.
- The images submitted shall not have been used in any previous ICPA Knockout Competition.
- The first ten images will make up the entry, with the eleventh being a reserve. The eleventh image will be used in the event of a tie between two or more clubs for 1st place
Process
There are a number of rounds (circa 7) with images being eliminated at each stage.
Images eliminated in Round 1 score 2 points, Round 2 score 3 points etc., through to the last 3 images which score 8, 9 or 10.
The winning club is the one with the most points from their 10 images. A tie (for 1st place only) would necessitate the use of the 11th image as a tie break.
