The Ted Coleman
The ‘Ted Coleman’ is an annual club photography competition organised by Rochdale Camera Club to which approximately 20 north west camera clubs including ourselves are invited.
Ted was one of the founders of the Club, along with the current organiser John Smith, and the competition is held in his memory.
The format of the competition is quite different to any other that we enter in that you have 13 images that you have to play tactically in a number of knockout rounds. There are no restrictions on genre, it’s an open competition so nature restrictions for example do not apply.
The rules are simply these:

The format of the competition is quite different to any other that we enter in that you have 13 images that you have to play tactically in a number of knockout rounds. There are no restrictions on genre, it’s an open competition so nature restrictions for example do not apply.
The rules are simply these:
- The mission is to stay in the competition for as long as possible!
- The competition consists of three rounds and a final round to decide the winning club.
- Each club needs an entry of 13 digital images with a maximum of 3 images per worker. Each image will only ever be projected once.
- From their bank of 13 images, each club will have preselected 4 images to compete in round one. The idea is to play your images like a ‘poker hand’ - you could play your best in the early rounds to ensure that your club continues in the competition or possibly take a chance on qualifying and save the best until last!
- In each of the three rounds, the judge will mark each image out of 20
- After each round the club marks will be totalled and the lowest scoring club/s will drop out (the number of clubs dropping out in each round depends on the number of entrants and will be announced prior to the start of the competition). In the event of two or more of the lowest clubs being on the same mark, then the club that had a higher single image score out of their 4 entries would go through then 2nd highest scores - if this was inconclusive then those clubs would be allowed to continue into the next round.
- The scores from each round are not carried forward and deal only with the round in question and images once used, cannot be used again.
- Those clubs remaining in the competition will then select a further four new images from their bank for round two and the same procedure will be followed.
- There will be a break between each round for a chat and whilst the qualifying clubs select their next round images.
- Those clubs who make it into round three will select a further four images leaving them with just one image remaining. At the end of this round, the two highest marked clubs and ties will then project their one remaining image to decide the eventual winner.
